One Degree of Difference

One degree of difference.

I would often encourage our youth leaders that their job was simple. It was their task to simply make make one degree of difference in a youth’s life.  One degree may not sound like much at the time but a one degree difference can make a huge difference down the road if kept in the same direction. And a bunch of one degree changes can lead to vast changes down the road. Anyone who has tried orienteering in the wilderness could tell you this.

I have been reflecting on this for myself recently, as I just got back from visiting with Scott Hill, my old friend and coworker in youth ministry. He has been one of those one degrees of change in my life. We met almost ten years ago in Norfolk, VA as he was the youth pastor at Tab and I was a very green youth pastor looking for some work. He graciously took me on board and we served together for the next three years. I would’ve never have imagined that today we would be both serving in Mexico and partnering once again to help bring the healing message of Christ to youth and families.

It’s crazy and weird when I think about it and how God seemed to have orchestrated our experiences together. Both of us would have laughed at you if you told us we would be together serving youth and families in Mexico almost ten years later. But here we are… still wondering where God is leading us but seeking to be obedient to his calling in our lives. God has given each of us and our families experiences that have been woven together and now are being put into play here in Mexico. Love for the poor. Love of the Spanish language and Latino culture. Love for youth and families. These are all things that are seemingly small, one degrees of change if you
will, but when coupled with the all surpassing love and power of God they have accumulated to make a huge difference over time.

I wonder what the one degrees of change are in your life? What are some things you may be overlooking or neglecting because you don’t think they really matter? Have you sought to dedicate even the small things in your life to God?

Don’t be discouraged and overlook these small degrees in your life. You may not know how they are being used now but one day further down the road they may come back and surprise you at where they have lead you and how they are being used in big ways for the Kingdom of God.
